What Really Determines Flooring Cost in San Antonio? An Honest Guide from Pride Floors

Every flooring quote in San Antonio is a little different. Richard breaks down the factors that actually drive the number — no made-up prices, just straight talk.

    Richard Cavazos

"What's this going to cost?" — that's the first question just about everybody asks when they walk into the showroom, and I don't blame y'all one bit. It's the right question. The honest answer, though, is that every job is a little different. What I *can* do is walk you through the factors that actually move the number up or down, so when you get a quote from us (or anybody else in San Antonio), you know exactly what you're looking at.

You'll notice I'm not throwing dollar figures at you in this guide. That's on purpose. Most of the "flooring cost" articles floating around online toss out ranges that were either made up, copied from another market, or five years out of date. That doesn't help anybody. What helps is understanding *why* a quote lands where it lands. Once you get that, comparing bids is a whole lot easier.

    1. The Material You Pick

This is the biggest lever, and it's the one you actually get to choose. In broad strokes: laminate is usually the budget-friendly option, carpet sits in a similar range depending on the fiber and pad, LVP steps up from there (and it's where most families land these days), and tile and real hardwood are typically the bigger investments. Engineered hardwood is a smart middle ground if you want the real-wood look without the drama solid hardwood can give you in our Texas humidity.

Inside every one of those categories there's a wide spread too. A cheap builder-grade LVP and a thick, well-backed LVP with a real wear layer aren't the same product, even though they look similar in a photo. Same with carpet — the fiber, the twist, the pad underneath all matter. We'll show you the difference in person so you're not guessing.

    2. How Much Is the Floor vs. How Much Is the Labor

A flooring quote isn't one number — it's really two. There's the material, and there's everything it takes to get that material installed correctly and warrantied. Depending on what you pick, the split between those two can look very different. Tile jobs, for example, are labor-heavy because of the prep, the setting, and the grout work. A straightforward LVP job over a clean subfloor is more material-driven.

That's why "per square foot" numbers you see online can be misleading. Two houses with the same square footage can land in very different places once you factor in what actually has to happen on install day.

    3. Subfloor Condition and Prep

This is the one that surprises folks the most. Your subfloor — the layer underneath what you see — has to be flat, dry, and solid before we lay a single plank or tile. If it's not, we've got to fix it. That might mean self-leveler in a low spot, patching, or replacing a section that got water damaged years ago and nobody knew.

There's no way to know for sure what shape a subfloor is in until we pull up the existing floor. That's why a good quote includes an honest conversation about prep — and why we'd rather flag a potential issue up front than surprise you halfway through the job.

    4. Demo — And When You Can Skip It

Tear-out costs money, so any time we can skip it, we do. A great example: if you've got solid, well-adhered ceramic tile on a slab, we can often lay a quality LVP right on top of it. No demo, no dumpster, no dust storm in your living room. That saves you real money and shaves days off the schedule.

Other times, the existing floor has to come out — old carpet with worn pad, laminate that's already swollen, or tile that's cracked or hollow underneath. We'll tell you straight which category you're in when we walk the job.

    5. Furniture Moving — A Two-Way Street

We move furniture for you, and it's included in the job. Here's the deal we ask in return: the small stuff — lamps, electronics, décor, clothes in the closet, everything on top of dressers and shelves — that part's on you. We handle the heavy lifting; y'all handle the breakables. It keeps the project moving and keeps your things safe. Simple as that.

    6. Transitions, Trim, and the Little Custom Stuff

The parts of the job you don't think about at the showroom often show up on the quote. Transitions where flooring meets carpet or tile. New shoe molding or baseboards if the old ones don't come off clean. Custom stair nosings. Thresholds at exterior doors. Reducers at hearths. None of it is expensive on its own, but it adds up, and skipping it is what makes a job look "almost done" instead of finished.

We spec this stuff on the front end so it's not a change order on the back end.

    7. Room Type and Trade Coordination

A bedroom is straightforward. A master bathroom with a walk-in shower is a different animal. Wet areas usually mean coordinating with a plumber, waterproofing correctly, and building the shower pan and curb so it lasts. Good news: we handle that. Our plumbers, our schedule, one point of contact. You're not the one juggling calls between trades.

Kitchens are similar. If we're pulling appliances or working around cabinet toe kicks, that's factored into the timeline and the quote up front.

    8. Project Size and Layout

Bigger isn't always more expensive per square foot — sometimes it's actually a little more efficient because we're already mobilized and set up. But layout matters. A wide-open living/dining/kitchen combo installs faster than the same square footage broken up into a maze of small rooms with lots of doorways, closets, and angles. Diagonal installs, herringbone patterns, and picture-frame borders all take more time and more material (there's more waste when you're cutting angles).

None of that is a reason not to do it — plenty of the best-looking floors we install involve a pattern or a border. Just know that layout choices show up on the quote.

How to Get a Real Number

Here's the honest path to a real, apples-to-apples price for your home:

  1. Book a free in-home estimate. We come out, measure, and look at your actual subfloor situation.
  2. We walk the job together. You tell us how you use each room, and we tell you what's going to hold up.
  3. You get a transparent, itemized quote — material, labor, prep, transitions, everything.
  4. Every install we do comes with our lifetime labor warranty. If our install fails, we fix it. Period.

  5. That's it. No high-pressure pitch, no "today only" pricing games.
