I see it happen all the time. Someone walks into my showroom, ready to upgrade their floors, and the first thing they say is:
“I just want something that looks good and lasts.”
That’s it. That’s what most people want. And honestly? It should be simple. But a lot of homeowners get burned because they pick the wrong flooring for Texas conditions—either because some big-box store sold them on a trend or because they tried to go cheap, only to pay double later when it didn’t hold up.
So let’s talk about what actually works. What’s durable? What handles humidity, heavy foot traffic, and whatever else Texas weather throws at it? And more importantly—what should you avoid?
Also, if you’re thinking about a flooring upgrade, February is the time to start planning because a couple of big home improvement events are coming to San Antonio. More on that later. First, let’s get into the good (and bad) flooring choices.
What Makes a Floor “Durable” in Texas?
Not all flooring is built the same. If you live in Texas, you need something that can handle:
✔ Humidity & Temperature Swings – Summers are brutal, and winters aren’t always mild. A bad floor will expand, contract, and eventually warp.
✔ Heavy Traffic – Between pets, kids, and guests, your floors take a beating. Some materials hold up better than others.
✔ Water Resistance – Spills, leaks, and muddy shoes happen. You don’t want flooring that soaks up moisture like a sponge.
1. Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) – The One That’s Hard to Beat
Alright, if I had to pick one go-to flooring for Texas homeowners, it’s this.
✔ Waterproof. Not just water-resistant—WATERPROOF.
✔ Handles heavy traffic. I’ve seen this stuff take on high heels, furniture scrapes, and pet claws like it’s nothing.
✔ Looks like real wood, but zero maintenance.
If you’ve got pets, kids, or just want a floor that won’t stress you out, LVP is your best bet.
Story Time: A family came into my showroom last year. Two dogs. A toddler. A backyard pool. They were debating between laminate and LVP. I told them flat out: “If you get laminate, you’re going to regret it the first time your kid dumps a sippy cup on the floor.” They took my advice and went with LVP. A year later? Still looks brand new.

2. Engineered Hardwood – If You Insist on Real Wood, Get This
I get it. Some people just love real wood. And that’s fine—as long as you pick the right kind.
✔ Looks like solid hardwood because it is. The top layer is real wood.
✔ More stable than solid hardwood. Handles humidity much better.
✔ Still needs care, but won’t warp as fast as traditional wood.
Straight Talk: If you want hardwood, don’t even think about solid wood unless you want to deal with warping, gaps, and constant refinishing. Engineered hardwood is the only smart option for Texas.

3. Tile – Still One of the Best for Texas, But…
Tile has been around forever because it lasts. But I’ll be honest—not every tile works for every home.
✔ Water-resistant and easy to clean. Perfect for kitchens and bathrooms.
✔ Durable as hell. If you crack a tile, you probably dropped something heavy on it.
✔ New styles mimic wood, stone, and concrete. You’re not stuck with old-school square tiles.
What I Tell Customers: “Tile is great, but if you put it in your whole house, your feet are going to freeze in the winter. At least use rugs.”
If you’re heading to the San Antonio Spring Home + Garden Show (Feb 21-23), check out some of the newer wood-look porcelain tiles. They’re a good option if you like the wood look but want the durability of tile.

Floors That Aren’t Ideal for Main Areas in Texas (But Still Have Their Place)
Not every flooring type is built for high-traffic, high-humidity Texas homes, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have their uses. Here’s where these materials work best—and where they don’t.
✔ Laminate Flooring – Looks great and is budget-friendly, but it’s not the best for areas that see moisture (like kitchens or entryways). If it gets wet, it can warp. However, for dry spaces like bedrooms or offices, it’s still a solid option.
✔ Carpet – Soft, comfortable, and great for soundproofing. But in Texas, humidity and heavy traffic wear it down fast—so it’s best kept in low-traffic areas like bedrooms where comfort matters more than durability.
✔ Solid Hardwood – Classic and beautiful, but high-maintenance in Texas weather. It expands and contracts with humidity, so it’s not ideal for large, open areas. That said, if you love real wood, it works well in controlled environments like formal dining rooms or upstairs spaces.
Bottom Line: These floors still have a place in Texas homes—they just need to be used strategically. If you’re set on one of these options, we’ll help you choose the right type and make sure it’s installed in a way that maximizes its lifespan.

Final Thoughts (From a Guy Who’s Been Doing This for Years)
Look, flooring is a long-term investment. I see too many people make the wrong call because they:
Pick something trendy instead of something durable.
Buy based on price alone, only to replace it sooner than expected.
Get sold on the wrong flooring by someone who doesn’t know Texas conditions.
